The first execution recorded in the United States in 2026 took place in Texas, closing a judicial case that had dragged on for nearly three decades. This Texas execution 2026 marked a significant moment in the country’s capital punishment timeline.

The convicted man, responsible for the murder of his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, surprised many by publicly asking for forgiveness just minutes before his death. His final message stood in sharp contrast to the brutality of the crime for which he was sentenced.

The Execution That Closed a Historic Case in Texas

The Case at a Glance

Charles Victor Thompson, 55, was executed by lethal injection on Wednesday night at the Huntsville Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Authorities reported that he was pronounced dead at 6:50 p.m. local time, making him the first person executed in the country so far this year—an event widely covered as part of the Texas execution 2026.

Thompson was convicted of murders committed in April 1998 against his ex-girlfriend, Glenda Dennise Hayslip, 39, and her new partner, Darren Keith Cain, 30.

The crimes occurred at Hayslip’s apartment in the Houston metropolitan area.

What Charles Victor Thompson Said Before Dying

Before the lethal dose was administered, Charles Victor Thompson addressed the victims’ families.

In his final statement, he asked for forgiveness and spoke about the consequences of the long judicial process and his execution.

“I hope you can begin to heal and move past this. There are no winners in this situation,” he said after receiving a prayer from a spiritual advisor.

He also claimed that his execution “creates more victims and traumatizes more people even 28 years later.”

In his last words, Thompson added:

“I’m sorry for what I did. I’m sorry for what happened, and I want to tell all of you that I love you and that… you should keep Jesus in your lives, put Jesus first.”

How the First 2026 Execution Unfolded in Texas

According to reports from the Associated Press, Thompson gasped heavily as the injection began to take effect.

He then took about a dozen breaths that turned into snoring-like sounds before he stopped moving altogether.

He was pronounced dead approximately 22 minutes after the procedure began.

Reactions from Both Sides

Family members of the victims witnessed the execution.

Afterward, Dennis Cain, father of Darren Keith Cain, reacted with a blunt statement: “He’s in hell.”

Meanwhile, Harris County prosecutor Sean Tear, whose office handled the case, stated:

“This chapter is closed.” He added, “It was justice that took a long time to arrive.”

What Happened the Night of the Crime

According to court records, in the early morning hours of the crime, Charles Victor Thompson went to Hayslip’s apartment around 3:00 a.m. and got into an argument with Darren Keith Cain.

After the altercation, police were called, and Thompson was ordered to leave the apartment complex.

However, he returned about three hours later and shot the couple. Cain died at the scene, while Hayslip passed away a week later due to her injuries.

A Process Marked by Appeals and an Escape

Charles Victor Thompson’s original death sentence was overturned at a later stage in the legal process.

Nevertheless, in November 2005, a new jury once again sentenced him to death by lethal injection.

Shortly after being resentenced, Thompson escaped from the Harris County jail in Houston and remained on the run for three days before being recaptured.

He was arrested in Louisiana while attempting to arrange international money transfers, which authorities viewed as an attempt to flee to Canada.

Approximately one hour before the Texas execution 2026, the Supreme Court of the United States rejected a final appeal.

Days earlier, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles had also denied his request to have the death sentence commuted to a lesser punishment.
